The Survival Rival kits were first produced by the Wellcome Trust to mark
the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. To celebrate Wellcome Trust are providing
FREE experiment kits to ALL state secondary schools across the UK. The experiments
are designed to be simple yet effective, and illustrate Darwin's theories of evolution in practice.
Age Range 11-14, I'm a worm get me out of here

Present different coloured spaghetti
"worms" to birds and observe which they
prefer to eat. Allow the remaining "worms"
to "breed" and over time the proportion
of those that are not eaten will increase,
simulating directional selection.

Age range 14-16, Brine Date

Students will observe brine shrimp
swimming, distinguish between the sexes
and observe mating pairs. Hypotheses
can be made and tested about the
phenomenon of mate-guarding in these
fascinating creatures.

Age range 16+, The X Bacteria

Students will learn about how antibiotic
resistance spreads between bacteria by
"mating" two strains of bacteria resistant
to different antibiotics and testing if
conjugation has occurred and if resistance
has been transferred.

- Schools are only eligible for the kits appropriate to the age of students at their school.
- State-funded FE colleges are eligible to receive free kits of The X-Bacteria which is the kit suitable for 16-19 year olds.
Terms and Conditions
Please allow up to 28 days for delivery. UK State Schools can order one of each kit. The kits provide everything that you need to perform the experiments, including Teacher and Student notes. The kits are designed for a class of up to 30 students, working in small groups of 2 or 3.
Please specify your required delivery date when you place your order. If you specify a date which falls within a school holiday period, we will deliver the kits on the first day of the next term. The Brine Date kit and the X-Bacteria kits both contain live components and it is therefore better for you to receive the kits at the time that you plan to start running the experiments. The Brine Date and X-Bacteria kits will not be dispatched on a Thursday or Friday, to avoid a weekend delivery. We will deliver the kit at the beginning of the following week.
