The Survival Rival kits were first produced by the Wellcome Trust to mark
the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. To celebrate Wellcome Trust are providing
FREE experiment kits to ALL state secondary schools across the UK. The experiments
are designed to be simple yet effective, and illustrate Darwin's theories of evolution in practice.
Present different coloured spaghetti
"worms" to birds and observe which they
prefer to eat. Allow the remaining "worms"
to "breed" and over time the proportion
of those that are not eaten will increase,
simulating directional selection.
Students will observe brine shrimp
swimming, distinguish between the sexes
and observe mating pairs. Hypotheses
can be made and tested about the
phenomenon of mate-guarding in these
fascinating creatures.
Students will learn about how antibiotic
resistance spreads between bacteria by
"mating" two strains of bacteria resistant
to different antibiotics and testing if
conjugation has occurred and if resistance
has been transferred.
